If you had asked me what my book was about when I first sat down to write it, I would have told you that it was about the study of fear. Specifically, I had begun writing about fear's impact on our decision-making abilities, as well as the outcome of those decisions inhibiting one's quality of life.
Fast forward, over the course of writing, fear, as I would come to learn, was just the tip of the iceberg—the visible part above water representing a small fraction of the vast human experience. When one is narrowly focused just on what is visible and living under the limitations of fear, one struggles to see the unimaginably deep, larger than conceived, beauty of life and human potential which, by virtue, has infinite possibilities.
The more I wrote about my own experiences with fear, as well as what I had discovered through my research, the more I realized I was simply scratching the surface; fear was a singular roadblock beyond which existed a life rich with endless potential and opportunity.
As the book took shape, I was now writing about concepts seemingly much larger than the singular human emotion of fear, much larger than my existence. I was writing about the universality of love, the difference between having and acting on empathy, the connection between self-identity and purpose, and the personal and societal impact of oppressive law-making. These were topics which, at first, seemed unrelated but as my research and my writing would go on to suggest, are uniquely connected by our shared experience of what it means to be human—our collective evolutionary story.
Writing this book was a labour of love, and it is my great privilege to be sharing it with you.
